The Goethe-Institut is the cultural institute of the Federal Republic of Germany. It promotes German language learning, promotes a comprehensive image of Germany, and engages in international cultural collaboration. Salvador is one of 13 branches in South America, of which five are in Brazil, including the Regional Institute in São Paulo. All in all, the Goethe-Institut has a network of 159 locations in 98 countries on all continents. In addition, it collaborates with cultural associations, libraries and foreign language teaching centers.
Since its foundation in 1962, the Goethe-Institut Salvador-Bahia has relied on close cooperation with its numerous public and private, Brazilian and international partners. After more than 50 years of continuous activities in the city, it started the Artistic Residency Program Vila Sul in 2016.
